ZCU given 24 hour deadline

Wednesday, May 19 2004

The ICC has given the Zimbabwe Cricket Union (ZCU) a 24 hour deadline to pick a creditable squad for the first Test against Australia or the tour, or at least the Tests may be canceled.

ICC CEO Malcolm Speed has given the ZCU and the players to put an end to the dispute over the leading white player's claims that the XIs for Test and for limited over internationals are favoring black players, 24 hours to put to an end to this or the Australian tour maybe shelved.

This action comes after pressure from various members from the cricketing world for the ICC to step and end this farce and potentially one of Test cricket's greatest ever mis matches.

To make matters worse, Zimbabwe A were bundled out for 151 against a 13 man Australian team (for those new to the game it isn't a first class match), Australia reached that score by stumps on day 1 with one wicket down.

The possibility of up to 5 ODIs instead of the Tests has been mentioned as a viable option, or the players coming home, thus losing TV revenue. However, with the two Tests likely to go for three days maximum, the players could be excused for working on their golf swing.
