Marsh to quit as Zimbabwe coach
Monday, May 17 2004Geoff Marsh has said that he will quit as Zimbabwe's cricket coach when his current contract expires in September this year.
Marsh had been asked by the Zimbabwe Cricket Union to continue untill the 2007 World Cup in West Indies, but he has declined.
Marsh said, "I didn't want to stay that long. There is no other reason."
This means that Marsh will not be the coach, come October, when England tour the troubled country. However, he has suggested that former West Indies batsman Phil Simmons would be his most likely successor.
Simmons has been in Zimbabwe for the past several weeks coaching at the Academy in Harare.
The chief executive of the ZCU, Vincent Hogg has declined to comment on Marsh's resignation or whether they had asked Simmons to take over.
