16TH MAY 2004
Glamorgan vs Essex
Glamorgan maintained their position at the top of the table with a comfortable seven-wicket win. Batting first, Essex made a dreadful start and at one point had slumped to 85 for 6. Thanks to some spirited resistance from Middlebrook and Cowan, they eventually finished on 162 for 9 from their 45 overs. However, it never looked like being enough and Glamorgan cruised home with seven overs to spare. Alex Wharf led the way with a quick-fire 41, and Matthew Maynard saw them home with an unbeaten 45.
Gloucestershire vs Surrey
After an indifferent start to their season, Gloucestershire must have been delighted to entertain Surrey today, whose performances to date have been X-Certificate. Sure enough, the home side's batsmen were able to reach a commanding total of 257 for 6 without undue alarm. Gidman top-scored with 70, but all of the top 6 made useful contributions. Despite 73 from Ramprakash, Surrey never got close and finished 42 runs adrift at 215 for 9. All of the Gloucestershire attack bowled tidily, but three run-outs, starting with the hard-hitting Scott Newman, were indicative of Surrey's present form.
Lancashire vs Hampshire
Lancashire are in powerful form at the moment, and they continued in that vein by demolishing Hampshire with 13 overs to spare. The visitors could only manage 189 for 9, which would have been even worse without 54 from Michael Clarke. Saj Mahmood again looked good with excellent figures of 3 for 40. In replay, Stewart Law led the way with a blistering 82 from 70 balls and Mark Chiltern saw them home with an unbeaten 58. It really was much too easy.
