CC1: Draws Abound
Wednesday, May 12 2004Lord's: Middlesex v Lancashire
Safety-first Lancs settle for Draw
A steady century from Mark Chilton and 91 from Stuart Law - who currently has 403 First Class runs at 134.33 this season - batted Lancashire well past safety at HQ. Mal Loye (60) and Chilton added 105 for the second wicket before Law helped add 113 for the third.
By the time Lance Klusener (4-89) had reduced 331-4 to 377-7, the game was long past the state of competition, and having been set 300 to win, play was stopped with the hosts 41 without loss from 14 overs.

Northampton: Northamptonshire v Sussex
Late declaration saves Sussex bacon
Northamptonshire had only themselves to blame
for their failure to convert superiority into victory after a spinelessly over-cautious declaration from David Sales and turgid top-order batting from Martin van Jaarsveld and Usman Afzaal, before Sales himself and Swann injected some urgency.
A round 100 was added for the fifth wicket before declaration - but 299 in 39 overs was always out of reach, and despite 3-20 from Jason Brown and four catches from van Jaarsveld, Sussex's score 69-7 makes their predicament look worse than it was - their survival fairly comfortable in the end.
Northamptonshire 400-9
U Afzaal 167*, BJ Phillips 73, MJG Davis 3-34
Sussex 294
IJ Ward 115, JF Brown 4-93, GP Swann 4-94
