ZCU rebels prepare to make offer
Monday, May 10 2004The majority of the rebels in the infamous stand-off between the Zimbabwe Cricket Union (ZCU) and 15 of it's leading players will meet today (May 10 2004) in Harare in attempt to enter mediation and make themselves available for the second Test which is to begin on Friday.
Rebel spokesman Trevor Gripper said they are ready, as a measure of goodwill, to resume training and make themselves available for the second Test.
One of the notable absentees will be Heath Streak, who's dismissal as captain was the beginning point of this stand-off. Streak has had regular meetings with local government officials about the future of their family farm in Matabeland.
With a large fuel crisis makes the 500 mile round trip difficult for him to attend the meeting.
Gripper explained the importance of arbitration, which the ZCU refuses to countenance it: "We still want to go to arbitration, and mediation would be a means to that end. This decision of ours is not set in stone. We have not changed out stance on this issue at all. Arbitration is legal binding and that's the objective and that's what we really want."
The ZCU refused to make a comment until the players proposal arrived.
