Vaughan doubtful for first Test

Wednesday, May 19 2004

England captain Michael Vaughan is said to be doubtful for the first Test against New Zealand starting tomorrow, after injuring his knee during a practice session.

Vaughan twisted his knee on Monday while facing a net bowler and as a result missed the entire training session yesterday (Tuesday). A decision regarding his participation in the Lord's Test will be taken after a re-assessement of the injury later today.

Vaughan had surgery on the same right knee in September 2002 to repair torn cartilage.

If Vaughan doesn't pass fit, Marcus Trescothick is said to be the most likely choice for stand-in captain.

Meanwhile, New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming, who too was considered doubtful for the series opener because of a groin injury, has been cleared to play in the first Test.
