Aus, NZ launch new ODI trophy

Thursday, May 20 2004

Cricket boards of Australia and New Zealand have announced that the two countries will play an annual One-Day International series, known as "The Chappell-Hadlee Trophy."

The first edition of the trophy will be a part of New Zealand's tour of Australia later this year in December.

The December 2005 trophy Series will be played in New Zealand and from December 2006 two matches in each series will be played in one country and one match in the other country on an alternating basis.

The trophy has been named after the Chappell and Hadlee families, that have contributed immensely to Australian and New Zealand cricket respectively, over years.

Walter Hadlee played for New Zealand on 11 occasions between 1937 and 1951, leading them 8 times. His sons, Dayle and Richard, continued the legacy, playing 112 Test between them, with the latter picking up 431 wickets, holding the record for highest wickets in Tests, until Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev overtook him.

The Chappells, Ian, Greg and Trevor represented Australia through the 70s and 80s, with Ian leading the side in 30 Tests, and Greg in 48.

Schedule for the 2004 Australia vs. New Zealand "Chappell-Hadlee Trophy":

* December 5 - Melbourne (D/N)
* December 8 - Sydney (D/N)
* December 10 - Brisbane (D/N)
