Hampshire sign Watson

Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has been signed by Hampshire, as their overseas back-up player for the forthcoming 2004 season, thus making him the county's third Australian signing, Shane Warne and Michael Clarke being the first two.
Since both Warne and Clarke could be required for Australian national duty while the English county season is in full flow, the county has chosen to be on the safer side by signing Watson.
Watson, at a young age of 23, has already played for Australia. However, an injury had put him out of contention for the squad. Thus, a spirited performance in the English domestic season could enhance his chances of an early comeback in the national team.
