Ganguly ruled out of 1st Test

Sunday, March 28 2004

Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly has been ruled out of the first Test Match of the historic series starting today (Sunday) in Multan.

Ganguly injured his back while fielding to an Inzamam straight-drive in the fifth and final one-day international of the Samsung Cup.

The MRI scan done on Ganguly's back revealed no serious damage, but the resultant pain from the injury is enough to keep him out of action for the first Test.

Ganguly's absence means vice-captain Rahul Dravid will lead India in a Test for only the second time.

Ganguly's replacement, without any doubt, will be Yuvraj Singh, who will be playing only his second Test.
