Ponting doubtful for Darwin Test
Tuesday, June 29 2004Australian captain Ricky Ponting is a doubtful starter for the first Test against Sri Lanka at Darwin starting Thursday, citing personal reasons.
Ponting flew off to Tasmania from Darwin yesterday where the Australian camp is training for the match, to visit two critically ill members of his family.
While Cricket Australia remains confident of Ponting's return by the time for the start of the match, he himself is pessimistic.
Ponting will make a final decision after consulting his family, most probably within the next 24 hours. If he indeed misses out, vice-captain Adam Gilchrist will take over the reign.
Ponting's likely replacement in the eleven could be Matthew Elliott, who had notched up seven centuries during the last Australian season for Victoria, and has apparently carried a similar form into the English County season for Glamorgan.
