Australia Name Champions Trophy 30
Saturday, July 3 2004Cricket Australia selectors have named a 30-man preliminary squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, in the process killing off any hope of a recall for Michael Bevan and introducing a number of uncapped players to the squad.
Strangely, however, the carrot dangles for Cricket Australia contract discard Andy Bichel, highlighting a lack of depth in the Australian fast bowling ranks. Although he is an unlikely selection, the fact he has not quite been squeezed out as planned is somewhat a worry.
The squad includes 7 uncapped players - batsmen Brad Hodge and Marcus North, all-rounders Dominic Thornely, Jon Moss and Cameron White as well as pace duo Shaun Tait and Damien Wright.
Justin Langer - who last played an ODI 7 years ago - has also been included.
The Champions Trophy tournament will take place in September in England, with the 30-man squad being trimmed to 14 closer to the date.
