CC1: Rain halts Lancs
Wednesday, June 30 2004The elements prevented Lancashire and Northamptonshire from ever looking like getting a result at Liverpool's Aigburth ground.
Usman Afzaal hit 133* for Northants and was ably supported by David Sales' 59 and last man Steffan Jones' 35, adding 71 for the last wicket after Gary Keedy (5-73) had reduced 258-5 to 284-9.
Graeme Swann and Johann Louw took three wickets each in the Lancashire reply, with Dominic Cork's 74 being the standout contribution in an innings scarely populated with highlights.
Having lost the first day to rain, by the time Northants started their second innings it was well into the final day, and a result was never likely. The visitors rotated their batting order and makeshift opener Gerry Brophy made 67 before Oliver Newby took his second and third FC wickets, Afzaal and Martin van Jaarsveld, before the game petered out into a draw.
