NatWest Opener Washout
Friday, June 25 2004The NatWest Series took a typically English angle in the first match, with play being washed out before a ball was bowled.
Despite being passed fit for the match in Manchester, the washout allows England's key opener Marcus Trescothick extra recovery time from an ankle injury.
Team England have already lost top all-rounder Andrew Flintoff for the series due to a foot injury. Rikki Clarke gets an ODI reprieve as his replacement, while Glamorgan's Michael Powell has been drafted in as a cover for Trescothick.
New Zealand, meanwhile, had a fairly settled lead-up to the opening fixture with Daniel Vettori the only injury concern after a successful return from Michael Papps.
The next match in the series is on Saturday at Edgbaston.
