Martin, Papps gain NZ contracts
Friday, April 23 2004Chris Martin and Michael Papps have been named among 18 other players, who have been awarded central contracts for the next 12 months by New Zealand Cricket. The list also includes Hamish Marshall, the third of the new inclusions.
The three new-comers have been given contracts at the cost of Matt Horne, Andre Adams and Rob Hart, all of whom have been ommitted.
Martin's inclusion was an easy prediction, after his performance in the three Test series against South Africa at home this season. He picked up a 10-wicket haul in the second Test of the series, which New Zealand won, apart from taking seven more in the third Test as well.
Papps, despite a poor Test series, had managed to gain credibility in the One-Day International series, scoring two half centuries. He also was able to perform consistently in the domestic circuit, thus pressing for his inclusion.
Marshall made his One-Day International debut in Pakistan last year as part of an under-strength New Zealand team, and impressed with his consistency. He has scored five fifties and a hundred in 16 One-Day matches.
Here is what manager Lindsay Crocker had to say about the three new inclusions:
- On Chris Martin: "Chris Martin had an outstanding domestic season which he carried through into his Test performances. He has gained a yard of pace and shown he has the ability to get top class batsmen out."
- On Michael Papps: "Michael Papps had some success in his first season at the highest level and we believe he will continue to develop positively in the coming year."
- On Hamish Marshall: "Hamish Marshall has been rewarded for his performances in one-day international Cricket over the last twelve months."
