CC2: Hampshire sneak past Durham
Tuesday, April 20 2004Southampton: Hampshire v Durham
Kendall and Mascarenhas calm nerves
Durham came nerve-wrackingly close to an incredible final day victory at the Rose Bowl as they reduced Hampshire, resuming overnight at 13-2, first to 26-5 and then 52-7 chasing just 109.
Mark Davies followed up his first innings six-wicket haul with three more and England U19's Liam Plunkett picked up the other four as both John Crawley and highly-rated Michael Clarke fell without scoring.
However, they couldn't keep up the intensity for the whole innings and change bowler Reon King bore the brunt of the hosts' counter-attack. With just Shane Warne and career rabbit Alan Mullally to come, Will Kendall (31*) and Dmitri Mascarenhas (33*) added 60 unbeaten runs as the hosts made it home.
