Kent in record chase
Sunday, April 25 2004In any usual day,the defeat of Surrey would take top billing, but this was no ordinary day at Canterbury.
Kent vs. Worcestershire
Resuming on 35-2 chasing a County record 429, not even the most ardent Kent fan could've been contemplating victory, but astonishingly they did in the end cruise home.
Alarm bells might have been started in the Worcestershire camp as nightwatchman Martin Saggers hang around for 2 and a half hours in making a career-best score, only his second half century in First Class Cricket, but when he fell at 170-4, there was precious little besides Geraint Jones to follow the pairing of Matthew Walker and Michael Carberry.
In fact, little was required after those 2, as both hit centuries in a stand of 236 that carried Kent up to the winning line, and Jones smashed 20 from 13 balls to carry them over it for an amazing run chase.
WORCESTERSHIRE 401 (Solanki 84, Peters 76, Extras 63, Bichel 50, Rhodes 42*, Sheriyar 5-94)
KENT 289 (Fulton 107, Walker 70, Tredwell 51*, Malik 5-88, Mason 4-55)
WORCESTERSHIRE 316-2 (Moore 108*, Hick 89, Smith 78*)
KENT 429-5 (Walker 151*, Carberry 112, Saggers 64, Key 46, Mason 3-86)
Surrey vs. Middlesex
Middlesex made a mockery of their 297 run target, as the top order all helped themselves to runs against an off-key Surrey attack.
Saqlain Mushtaq was the only bowler to strike, but his wickets were too infrequent, and he was milked for 4 an over as the batsmen rarely looked like falling short.
SURREY 418 (Hollioake 106, Newman 86, Salisbury 77, Keegan 5-138)
MIDDLESEX 325 (Shah 92, Hutton 78, Joyce 45, Azhar Mahmood 4-96, Saqlain Mushtaq 3-71)
SURREY 203 (Azhar Mahmood 70, Ramprakash 68, Hayward 4-41, Keegan 3-47)
MIDDLESEX 300-4 (Hutton 88, Shah 65, Koenig 62, Joyce 47, Saqlain Mushtaq 4-107)
