Streak never to return as captain
Thursday, April 22 2004Zimbabwe Cricket Union (ZCU) chairman, Peter Chingoka has said that Heath Streak would not be re-instated as the Zimbabwean team captain to settle the dispute between the board and 15 of the players.
Speaking to AFP, Chingoka said, "There is no reverse gear on the captaincy. The captaincy decision is set in stone. We can't give up on the principle because of the consequences."
Streak's return to captainship is one of the main demands kept forward by the group of 15 'rebels'. However, Chingoka does hope that Streak, as well as the other 14, can settle their differences with them, and return to the national side.
Chingoka said, "The door remains open to the players and their representatives to talk to the union in an attempt to find a solution to the very serious problems we are currently facing. Contrary to some media reports, the ZCU has no agenda to drive white players out of the game in Zimbabwe. Our first prize is for all players to come back. The second prize is that some of them come back and the third prize is that none of them do. We don't want that third prize."
Streak had been sacked as captain, after threatening to retire if his demands, majorly regarding selection, were not met with. Following his dismissal, 14 other players rebelled against the board to bring him back, as well as make the desired changes.
ZCU has given the 15 players till May 8 to compromise with the "important concessions" they have made. They include slimming down the national selection panel from six to four, paying 100% of the running costs of the Zimbabwe Professional Cricketers Association in the first year and 50% thereafter, and looking at a minimum wage for players.
