PCB to investigate injuries

Thursday, April 22 2004

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has set up a medical commission to probe into the spate of injuries that Pakistani players suffered during the home Test series against India, especially that of Shoaib Akhtar.

The four-member committee will investigate the injuries of wicket-keeper Moin Khan, all-rounder Abdul Razzaq, fast bowlers Umar Gul and Shabbir Ahmed, apart from Shoaib.

In an official statement, PCB chief executive Ramiz Raja said, "The commission has not been constituted to find a scapegoat. It has been constituted to find why so many players got injured, and what can be done in future to prevent so many injuries. The other objective is to help the players get their names cleared from the general perception that they faked their injuries, if they were genuinely injured."

Ramiz also added, "I must make myself very clear that if it was proved that some players did fake their injuries, they will be taken to task."

The commission consists of Riaz Ahmed (Pakistan team doctor), Dr Abdul Wajid (orthopedic surgeon, Aga Khan Hospital), Dr Naseer Ahmed (former head of orthopedic department, King Edward Medical College), and Dr Sohail Saleem (member, PCB panel of doctors).

Here is a brief overview of the players' injuries that will be investigated:

- Shoaib Akhtar (back and wrist): Pulled half way through the 3rd Test
- Moin Khan (groin): Missed the 2nd and 3rd Tests
- Abdul Razzaq (side strain): Missed the 2nd and 3rd Tests
- Umar Gul (back): Missed the 3rd Test
- Shabbir Ahmed (shin): Missed the 2nd and 3rd Tests
