CC2: Warne/Clarke shine for Hants
Saturday, April 17 2004Southampton: Hampshire v Durham
Australian imports Shane Warne and Michael Clarke played starring roles for Hampshire as their adopted county cruised into a dominant position at the end of the first day's play at the Rose Bowl against Durham.
Having won the toss, Durham suffered two early losses as Chris Tremlett and then Alan Mullally struck to reduce the visitors to 6-2, and they never recovered. Nicky Peng (49) and Aussie Marcus North (29) were the only batsmen to pass 20 and despite an effort at resilience from Liam Plunkett (15*), Durham were skittled for 128 inside 55 overs.
The whole Hampshire attack excelled, with Dmitri Mascarenhas taking 3-28, and Billy Taylor, Chris Tremlett and Warne two each. The Hampshire riposte then came at over four an over as Durham slid out the game.
Derek Kenway and John Crawley both made 35, before New South Wales batsman Clarke thumped a run-a-ball 73 comprising 14 boundaries before three late wickets, including Will Kendall without scoring, kept Durham just about in contention, Hampshire closing on 195-5. Mark Davies' medium pace picked up 3-36 whilst Reon King took the other two wickets to fall.
Durham 128
N Peng 49, AD Mascarenhas 3-28
Hampshire 195-5
MJ Clarke 73, AM Davies 3-36
Cardiff: Glamorgan v Derbyshire
Mohammad Ali struck twice in the 13.2 overs of play possible at Cardiff, and in combination with the run-out of Glamorgan keeper Mark Wallace, the hosts subsided to 68-3 by the rain-shortened close.
The Pakistani seamer had Aussie Matt Elliott caught behind and David Hemp trapped LBW on the following ball, however his seven overs also went for 41 runs as Michael Powell (26*) and Matthew Maynard (16*) added an unbroken 30 before the elements closed in.
Glamorgan 68-3
MJ Powell 26, Mohammad Ali 2-41
