NatWest: Franklin Replaces Mills
Wednesday, June 16 2004Kyle Mills will join Test specialists Chris Martin and Mark Richardson on the plane trip home to New Zealand following his withdrawal from the Black Caps NatWest squad.
Mills strained his side on Test debut in the third match at Trent Bridge following a 6-over spell in the first innings. Unable to bowl in the second innings, further fitness assessments confirmed that he would not be a starter in the triangular tournament that also features the West Indies.
The impressive left-armer James Franklin takes his place in the squad. Taking 6 wickets at Trent Bridge as well as contributing stodgily with the bat in his return to the Test side, Franklin offers important variety to an often one-dimensional attack.
Daniel Vettori and Michael Papps will stay on with the Black Caps squad after assessments revealed that they should be fit to take some part in the series. Spin linchpin Vettori damaged a hamstring during the second Test, while Papps broke his knuckle in the same match.
Shane Bond was withdrawn from the squad during the Test series.
