Bravo and Rampaul in WI Test squad
Wednesday, June 16 2004Dwayne Bravo and Ravi Rampaul may make their Test match debuts this summer in England, having been named in the 16-man squad for the upcoming 4-Test series. The Trinbagonians, who have only represented the West Indies in One Day Internationals to date, will be joined by Sylvester Joseph as the uncapped players.
Overall, there were few real surprises in the squad, with Lara leading the team and with Chanderpaul, Sarwan and Gayle providing the nucleus of the batting. The lone "specialist" spinner is Omari Banks and seamers Merv Dillon and Corey Collymore have been excluded, perhaps indicating the end of the former's international career. In their absence, the only real experience will be provided by resurgent left-armer Pedro Collins, on his first senior tour to England.
The young pacers Fidel Edwards (currently injured, but expected to return to fitness in time), the underworked Jermain Lawson and Tino Best will look to impress with the ball and Dwayne Smith and Devon Smith will seek to do so with the bat. Backing up veteran wicketkeeper, Ridley Jacobs, will be young Carlton Baugh Jr.
The full squad is as follows:
BC Lara (captain)
RR Sarwan (vice-captain)
CH Gayle
DS Smith
S Chanderpaul
DR Smith
RD Jacobs (wicketkeeper)
R Rampaul
TL Best
FH Edwards
JJC Lawson
PT Collins
OAC Banks
CS Baugh Jr. (wicketkeeper)
