Williams To Miss Lankan Series

Wednesday, June 16 2004

Following the broken hand to Shane Warne, Australia have suffered another injury blow shortly before the beginning of the annual Top End Test series after Brad Williams was ruled out with back troubles.

Williams was flown home from the Australian ODI tour of Zimbabwe following back complaints midway through the first match of the series.

While scans revealed no major injuries had been sustained his recovery has not been completed in time, failing a fitness Test with the squad in Brisbane. He will now fly home to Perth for further treatment with an eye on the ICC Challenge in September.

No replacement has been named at this stage, with a host of seam bowlers including 2003/04 Pura Cup leading wicket-taker and one Test veteran Matthew Nicholson vying for a berth.

Meanwhile, Shane Warne has received a positive prognosis on his broken left hand with Hampshire announcing he is a likely starter in the second Test at least.
