Read out of England ODI squad
Sunday, June 13 2004England have dropped Chris Read to include Geraint Jones, as their wicket-keeper, for the squad to play in the NatWest series, which will be contested between them, West Indies and New Zealand.
Read, despite his match-winning performance in the first One-Day International on the West Indies tour, got the axe, largely due to Jones's performance with the bat in the on-going Test series against New Zealand, according to selectors.
Lancashire fast bowler Sajid Mahmood has got a largely expected call-up for the tournament, after picking up 19 wickets in 7 One-Day matches this English County season at av average of 13.94. The 22-year old had impressed immensely with his performances during the England A tour of India earlier this year.
The ones to miss out from the squad that took part in West Indies are Rikki Clarke, Gareth Batty and James Kirtley. Simon Jones has been rested after injuring his foot a couple of weeks back. Anthony McGrath, who wasn't played in a single match on the tour, retains his place. England's leading wicket-taker Darren Gough too holds on, after a forgettable performance.
England squad:
Michael Vaughan (Yorkshire, captain), James Anderson (Lancashire), Ian Blackwell (Somerset), Paul Collingwood (Durham), Andrew Flintoff (Lancashire), Ashley Giles (Warwickshire), Darren Gough (Essex), Stephen Harmison (Durham), Geraint Jones (Kent, wicket-keeper), Robert Key (Kent), Sajid Mahmood (Lancashire), Anthony McGrath (Yorkshire), Andrew Strauss (Middlesex), Marcus Trescothick (Somerset)
