Warne fit to play SL series
Wednesday, June 23 2004Doubts surrounding Shane Warne's participation in the forthcoming home Test series against Sri Lanka have been removed, as Cricket Australia said yesterday that the leg-spinner will be fit enough to play.
Warne sustained a broken hand while batting against Darren Gough during his county Gloucestershire's Championship match against Essex, which intially made his chances for the series bleak. However, an X-ray and subsequent tests have cleared him fit to play.
The team doctor, Trefor James said to the press, "Shane's hand has healed well and we now expect that he will be available for selection in the first Test against Sri Lanka. He has made very good progress since suffering the injury and come the first Test in Darwin, I wouldnt expect him to be suffering from much too much pain or discomfort."
Warne himself confirmed the above, "I will be fine to play. I had an X-ray and the doctor is very happy. The hand will still be sore for a while and I will probably have a bit of discomfort, but it will not stop me from performing my usual duties."
Warne is on the brink of overtaking Muttiah Muralitharan's record of 527 Test wickets, more so because the latter has made himself unavailable for the tour citing crowd behavior against him as the reason.
