Old Trafford: Lancashire v Middlesex
Peploe toils as Lancashire respond

If yesterday had been Middlesex's, thanks to Sven Koenig, today was resolutely Lancashire's. Koening fell having added just one to his overnight 170 before the lower order failed to stay with David Nash, who remained unbeaten on 81*.

The Lancashire reply was methodical and efficient as both openers added fifties before falling to left-arm spinner Chris Peploe, who bowled 28 overs for his 2-52 - the only successful bowler as Lancashire cruised to close on 253-2.

Middlesex 382
SG Koenig 171, JM Anderson 3-95
Lancashire 253-2
MJ Chilton 93, CT Peploe 2-52

The Oval: Surrey v Kent
Azhar halts Kent but Key stands firm

Mark Ramprakash and Jon Batty took their fourth wicket stand to 241 before Amjad Khan accounted for Batty, after which only Ali Brown's belligerent 79 continued the momentum, Rob Ferley taking 3-32 off 10 overs today to go with yesterday's 0-75 from 14.

Kent's reply started well enough with fifty between David Fulton and Rob Key, but Azhar Mahmood struck four times - all caught behind by Batty, before nightwatchman Martin Saggers fell - again caught behind - off Rikki Clarke to leave Kent 181-5 and still 149 short of avoiding the follow-on. Yet with the red-hot Key still in, hope remains.

Surrey 479
MR Ramprakash 157, JN Batty 129, RS Ferley 3-107
Kent 181-5
RWT Key 78*, Azhar Mahmood 4-56

Hove: Sussex v Northamptonshire
Brophy and Phillips punish hosts

Last year's Championship season must seem long ago for Sussex as they continued to struggle against newly-promoted Northamptonshire. South African-born Gerard Brophy bludgeoned 181 to go with David Sales' 171 as Brophy and Ben Phillips (58) added 132 for the eighth wicket.

Northants were finally dismissed for 570, Robin Martin-Jenkins taking 5-96 and Mushtaq Ahmed three wickets, before Steffan Jones and Phillips struck in the Sussex reply to leave them uncomfortably at 95-2 overnight.

Northamptonshire 570
GL Brophy 181, DJG Sales 171, RSC Martin-Jenkins 5-96
Sussex 95-2
IJ Ward 33, BJ Phillips 1-13

Edgbaston: Warwickshire v Worcestershire
Worcestershire let it slip

Naqqash Tahir skittled the last two Worcestershire wickets for just six runs on the second morning, but Andy Bichel and Matt Mason responded by reducing Warwicks to a precarious 50-4, and then 174-6 after Michael Powell (49) and Jim Troughton (67) posted 124 for the fifth wicket.

Dougie Brown (82), Tony Frost (27), Neil Carter (95) and Tahir (16) then contributed solidly from down the order as Warwickshire rallied to a scarcely believable 405 all out and 26-run lead, which was boosted further by Brown removing Stephen Peters and Tahir trapping Graeme Hick LBW in the 17 overs of Worcester's second knock.

Worcestershire 379
GA Hick 158, N Tahir 4-47
Warwickshire 405
NM Carter 95, DR Brown 82
AJ Bichel 5-126, MS Mason 4-80

Worcestershire 70-2
SC Moore 30*, N Tahir 1-12
