Old Trafford: Lancashire v Middlesex
Draw on the horizon

Mal Loye fell two short of a stodgy century as the match proceeded inexorably towards a draw. Jamie Dalrymple picked up three middle-order scalps and Chris Peploe made it 3-80 off his fifty overs when he bowled James Anderson, whilst Nantie Hayward's efforts were enough for a hugely impressive 3-39 from 21.

Thirty-five down on first innings, Middlesex made stumps for the loss of just two wickets, both to Anderson (2-39), as Ben Hutton (41) and Owais Shah (66*) added 109 for the second wicket.

The Oval: Surrey v Kent
Batty holds eight but Key stands again

Robert Key's golden summer continued as he stormed past 850 first-class runs with his fifth century in eleven innings as Kent followed on. Key could only make 86 first time round, however, as Martin Bicknell and Rikki Clarke took three wickets each to add to Azhar Mahmood's four as Kent were rolled for 239, Jon Batty taking an incredible eight catches behind the wicket.

Following on, 240 behind, Kent were reduced to 114-3 before Key (134*) and Michael Carberry (61) added 126 for the fourth wicket as Kent closed 14 ahead with six wickets in hand. What price Key passing 1,000 in May?

Hove: Sussex v Northamptonshire
Adams stars but Sussex collapse

Sussex, chasing 421 to avoid the follow on, looked supremely comfortable as Chris Adams and Richard Montgomerie (82) added 152 for the second wicket, and Adams, in combination with Tim Ambrose and Robin Martin-Jenkins, added another 167 for the next two wickets.

Yet when Adams was caught by Tim Roberts off Ben Phillips for a superb 330-ball round double ton, including 29 fours and two sixes, it was the start of an incredible fall of five wickets for eight runs, and 382-4 became 390-9. From there, Mushtaq Ahmed and Jason Lewry added 16 but it was not enough as Sussex were forced to bat again, making 31-0 by stumps.
