Another game, another Smith for WI

Thursday, May 20 2004

Another game, more rain, another close scoreline, and ultimately another victory for the West Indies over Bangladesh. The West Indies completed a 3-0 sweep of Bangladesh in the ODI series, finished today. In the first two matches there were two different heroes and this time the man for the home side proved to be Devon Smith.

Included in the final XI for the first time in the series, Smith played for a solid 39 to guide his team to an ultimately comfortable 7-wicket win in Grenada.

Bangladesh won the toss in the game, reduced to 25 overs per side, and elected to take first strike. Early wickets to Rampaul and Best saw the score to 18/2, but Habibul Bashar held his ship together with 4 fours in his captain's knock of 42 from 45 balls. Rajin Saleh (17), Faisal Hossain (17) and Mushfiqur Rahman (11) were the other contributors in the eventual score of 118/7. Dwayne Smith finished with career-best figures of 4-0-24-3.

The West Indian chase started briskly to say the least. Powell and Devon Smith added 21 runs in 3 overs, until the former was caught for 17. Dwayne Smith batted positively for 23 from 24 balls, then was trapped in front by Manjural Islam Rana.

Searching for runs, Chanderpaul joined Devon Smith, and the two added a further 55 runs, when they were parted at 107/3, Chanderpaul gone for 24. All that was left was for skipper Sarwan to play for 7 not out in support of Devon Smith's 39 not out (from 70 balls) to seal the game.

The West Indies, winners by 7 wickets, claimed the Man of the Match award (Devon Smith) and the Man of the Series award (Dwayne Smith).
