Worcester: Worcestershire v Gloucestershire
Only so much one Gidman can do

Gloucestershire's last realistic chance of saving the game at New Road disappeared, along with the bails off Tim Hancock's stumps, with Michael Mason's last ball of the day's play.

Alex Gidman had made 54 before being last out in Gloucester's first-time offering of 232, before they were reduced to 12-3 early in their follow on. Chris Taylor hung on for an hour, before Gidman (54*) and Hancock (66) added 111 for the fifth - until Mason intervened.

Hove: Sussex v Warwickshire
Bell canters to huge double

Ian Bell added a further 115 unbeaten runs to his overnight 147* as Warwickshire made light work of Sussex's bowlers. Bell, who hit 27 fours and six sixes in his 262*, was joined by Tony Frost (135*) in a huge unbroken stand of 289 for the seventh wicket, before declaration came at 600.

Ian Ward and Richard Montgomerie then made a bright start to the Sussex reply as they scored at nearly four an over, adding an unbeaten 84 before stumps.

The Oval: Surrey v Middlesex
Murtagh strikes back

A bright start from Surrey, and James Ormond in particular, went to waste after Middlesex were reduced to 62-4. All this did was to bring Jamie Dalrymple to join Ed Joyce at the wicket, for the two youngsters to add 298 for the fifth wicket.

Joyce, who was dismissed late in the day, made 123 but the stand was dominated by Cambridge blue Dalrymple who thundered 182* off just 234 balls, including 29 fours as Middlesex cleared the first-innings deficit.

Middlesex 363-5
JWM Dalrymple 182*, EC Joyce 123

Northampton: Northamptonshire v Kent
Sami burst changes the game

Northamptonshire's comfortable overnight 115-1 was as good as it got for the hosts as Pakistani Mohammad Sami produced an inspired spell to take four wickets - three bowled - and reduced the hosts to 147-6.

Only skipper David Sales' 70 drove Northants to respectability - and a second batting point, and Ben Phillips' 64-ball 4 also played a key role.

Kent's second knock was much more successful, however, as Dave Fulton (50*) and Rob Key (45*) added an unbroken 103 before stumps.

Northamptonshire 250
