Old Trafford: Lancashire v Middlesex
Koening ton makes up for Strauss

Missing England's new boy, Andy Strauss, Owais Shah took over the captaincy and Sven Koening stepped up to the plate with the runs, as he dominated stands of 92 with Ben Hutton and 88 with Shah.

Despite Ed Joyce and Paul Weekes falling in quick succession after Shah, Koenig remained strong as he reached stumps on 170*, with wicketkeeper David Nash 45* in an unbroken stand of 86 for the sixth wicket.

Middlesex 323-5
SG Koenig 170*, G Keedy 2-98

The Oval: Surrey v Kent
Batty and Ramprakash halt leaders

Surrey's season looked in danger of continuing down the same horrific vein at 1-2 this morning as Nadeem Shahid and Scott Newman both fell early. However, Mark Ramprakahs and Jon Batty both made centuries to save the hosts's blushes.

Ramprakash (123*) added 91 for the third wicket with Rikki Clarke (44), before being joined by wicketkeeper and captain Jon Batty (120*) as the innings was turned round with an unbroken 214 stand, Rob Ferley's 14 overs going for 75.

Surrey 306-3
MR Ramprakash 123*, JN Batty 120*, MJ Saggers 2-61

Hove: Sussex v Northamptonshire
Sales and Afzaal boost visitors

David Sales and Usman Afzaal both ended the day on 472 Championship runs for the season as Northants recovered from 53-3 - Robin Martin-Jenkins taking two early wickets - at Hove.

Sales hit an unbeaten 153, adding 179 for the fourth wicket with England discard Afzaal (69), before putting on a further 65 with Gerard Brophy (36*) before stumps.

Northamptonshire 315-5
DJG Sales 153*, RSC Martin-Jenkins 2-48

Edgbaston: Warwickshire v Worcestershire
Hick stars again but Warwicks fight back

The rejuvenated Graeme Hick hit yet another century as Worcestershire established a strong position at rivals Warwickshire. Hick (158) and Ben Smith (67) amassed 141 for the third wicket. Recent International Vikram Solanki fell quickly, but with Gareth Batty and Andy Bichel (35), Hick took Worcester to 357-5.

Hick, however, was run out and Ian Bell claimed reward for 26 overs of economical medium-pace bowling by collecting both Bichel and Batty before Naqqash Tahir removed Stephen Rhodes with the last ball of the day to leave the game back in the balance at 373-8.

Worcestershire 373-8
GA Hick 158, N Tahir 2-42
