TOTESPORT LEAGUE FIRST DIVISION
23 MAY 2004

Gloucestershire 240 for 5
Hampshire 244 for 6

The return of Shane Warne inspired Hampshire to a four wicket win to keep in touch with the leaders. He claimed 4 for 29 as Gloucestershire failed to fully capitalise on the good start provided by Spearman (57) and Weston (75). Then, batting at number three, he hit 48 from 49 balls to pave the way for a comfortable win. Dighton top scored with 73.

Glamorgan 210
Lancashire 211 for 5

This top-of-the-table clash turned out to be a one-sided affair. Glamorgan failed to make the most of a good start, declining from 132 for 2 to a disappointing 210ao. Mahmood again impressed with 4 for 39, including the vital wickets of Elliott and Maynard. Wharf made a blistering 72 but no-one else made a significant contribution. Thereafter, the result never looked in doubt. Despite occasionally losing wickets, Lancashire always kept well ahead of the required run-rate and with all of their top five making useful contributions they cantered home with 10 overs to spare.

Northamptonshire 211 for 5
Kent 146

Northants’ total initially looked inadequate against Kent’s strong batting line-up. Saggers claimed three quick wickets before Afzaal (66) and Sales (51*) led a recovery, but the visitors must have fancied their chances. In fact, they never got close. The wickets were shared fairly equally between the bowlers as Northants managed their first win of the season.

Surrey 268
Essex 237

Surrey’s total was largely due to a rapid 106 from Scott Newman. Batty (66) was the only other batsman to provide any support and, after a good start, their final total was slightly disappointing. Zaheer Khan marked his debut by bowling Jefferson first ball of the innings and then claimed Cook later in the same over. Despite their traumatic start, Essex recovered well and Andy Flower (70) seemed to be guiding them home. However, a late collapse against Hollioake and Ormond saw Essex fall 31 runs short and Surrey record their first win in any competition this year.
