Vaughan returns for England

Monday, May 31 2004

England captain Michael Vaughan has been passed fit for the second Test against New Zealand starting Thursday at Headingley, after missing the first match through injury.

Vaughan had injured his right knee, while batting in the nets before the first Test at Lord's, as a result dropping out of the match.

Vaughan will play a county game, a Totesport League match against Ireland on Monday, to gain some match practice ahead of the Test.

Meanwhile, Andrew Strauss, who scored 112 and 83 on debut at Lord's, predictably has been named in the 13-man squad for Headingley, effectively replacing Nasser Hussain, who announced his retirement last week, after scoring a memorable century to take England home easily while chasing 281.

Vaughan's return will pose the problem of selecting an opening pair, as Strauss proved his worth at the top at Lord's, while Trescothick too showed signs of a return to form. Chairman of selectors David Graveney, after naming the squad, told the BBC, "Michael is captain of England and I think it is his responsibility to decide what his batting lineup is."

England squad:
Michael Vaughan (captain), Marcus Trescothick, Andrew Strauss, Mark Butcher, Graham Thorpe, Paul Collingwood, Andrew Flintoff, Geraint Jones (wicket-keeper), Ashley Giles, Simon Jones, Matthew Hoggard, James Anderson, Steve Harmison.
