CC2: Hampshire force victory
Sunday, May 2 2004Southampton: Hampshire v Leicestershire
Brown and Mascarenhas star as Leicester collapse
A consummate Hampshire performance was enough to see off a demoralised Leicestershire side at the Rose Bowl in only two days' worth of play on the South Coast. Resuming on 93-1, Michael Brown played the anchor role in the hosts' innings, backed up by cameo efforts from Lawrence Prittipaul, Nic Pothas and skipper Shane Warne, who declared at 268-6 as Brown reached his maiden first-class ton despite Australian import Michael Clarke's failure to score.
The aggressive declaration, when other captains may have batted on for 400 and batting points, left Leicestershire, 129 behind, resuming their second innings against the Second Divison's strongest bowling attack with survival in mind, and Dmitri Mascarenhas once again starred with the ball as he trapped five of the first six wickets to fall.
The introduction of spin in the form of Warne himself and Shane Udal then precipitated the collapse of the tail, despite Claude Henderson's 69-minute unbeaten vigil, as Leicestershire capitulated to 111 all out.
Leicestershire 139

Hampshire 268-6
MJ Brown 102*, MF Cleary 3-57

CC2: Somerset and Derbyshire in the Runs
Chelmsford: Essex v Somerset
Dutch magic keeps Somerset on top
Keith Dutch's second first-class five-wicket haul was enough for Somerset to bowl out Essex and claim the maximum possible first-innings points despite fifties from Will Jefferson (85) and James Foster (75*). Resuming on 28-0, Alistair Cook fell for 20, before Andy Flower was run out.
The introduction of Dutch into the attack then led to the Essex middle order steadily stumbling towards oblivion. Andy Caddick took two wickets in three balls as Dutch bowled around him to remove the tail, despite Foster's best efforts to shepherd them.
Essex's follow on ended after just 10.1 overs with only one wicket down, Will Jefferson caught behind first ball off Nixon McLean.
Somerset 400-3
PD Bowler 187*, M Burns 124*
Essex 231
WI Jefferson 85, KP Dutch 5-65
Essex 36-1
AN Cook 20*, NAM McLean 1-18

Derby: Derbyshire v Durham
Botha spins Derby to first-innings points
South African left-arm spinner Ant Botha took 4-66 as he cleaned up the Durham tail to ensure a 12-point haul for the hosts at the County Ground. Liam Plunkett removed Aussie Chris Rogers (156) early on, but a 40-run stand for the ninth wicket between Graeme Welch and Kevin Dean guided the hosts to 400-8.
The Durham reply revolved around the efforts of Western Australian opener Marcus North, who scored 119 at almost a run a ball, with 15 fours and three sixes, with the only significant support coming from wicketkeeper Andy Pratt (44) - only two other batsmen passed double figures as Durham stumbled to 232 all out once Botha cleaned up the tail.
Derbyshire 400-8
CJL Rogers 156, AM Davies 2-67
Durham 232
MJ North 119, AG Botha 4-66
Derbyshire (12pts) drew with Durham (7pts)
Nottingham: Nottinghamshire v Yorkshire
Gallian ton brightens draw
A century from Jason Gallian and breezy lower-order knocks from Mark Ealham and Paul Franks gave Nottinghamshire the best of a weather-affected draw at Trent Bridge. Charlie Shreck removed Richard Dawson (81) as Yorkshire made 264 from their overnight 246-9.
With no realistic chance of victory, Notts aimed to maximise their batting points, and skipper Jason Gallian led from the top of the order with a three-hour 133 that included 25 fours and a six, before Mark Ealham (54) and Paul Franks (44) provided the impetus to pass 350 and gain the fourth batting point before the dismissal of Ryan Sidebottom - Richard Dawson's third wicket of the innings - brought an end to the day's play.
Yorkshire 264
RKJ Dawson 81, GJ Smith 3-75
Nottinghamshire 353-8
JER Gallian 133, RKJ Dawson 3-102
Nottinghamshire (11pts) drew with Yorkshire (8pts)
