C&G2: Ireland & Devon Shock Winners

Friday, May 7 2004

Clontarf: Ireland v Surrey
Molins and White in Irish Delight

After Andy White and Andre Botha had tied up the Surrey innings with three wickets each last night, Ireland were bullish about their chances of chasing 262, and openers Jason Molins and Jeremy Bray went about it the right way.

A purposeful century partnership between the two half-centurions propelled the Irish into the driving seat in tie, before solid contributions down the order firmly kept them there. Gerard Dros made 45, and White and Kyle McCallan scored the last 39 in just six overs.

Surrey sent down 15 wides - with Martin Bicknell responsible for a third of them - in a ragged performance that contrasted with the Irish efficiency. Northamptonshire are the next visitors to the Emerald Isle, and who's to say that they won't return without a similar fate?

Surrey 261
AD Brown 67, AR White 3-43
Ireland 262-5
JAM Molins 57, Azhar Mahmood 2-60

Exmouth: Devon v Leicestershire
Hosts hold nerve after Foxes collapse

It became two shocks in one day at the Maer Ground in Exmouth after a disciplined display from the Devon bowler reduced Leicestershire to 115-8, with Neil Hancock and David Court taking two wickets each and veteran Andrew Procter three. Only a determined 33* from keeper Paul Nixon and a brisk 20 from Ottis Gibson led the Foxes to 156.

The home side made a slow start in reply, but the loss of Exeter University and Malaysia player Arul Suppiah precipitated a collapse from 50-1 to 75-6, before captain Robert Dawson was joined by Court, whose 36 pulled the initiative back towards the Minor County before he was caught off Jon Dakin.

Dawson (42) then brought the runs required down to 8 off 12 balls with Vernon Philander, before the South African Under 19 was run out. Procter then joined Dawson to add five more before the skipper holed out to mid on off Dakin - three needed off three balls.

However, Leicester's Jon Dakin's nerve failed him and he sent down a wide - one of two in the last over - before Faisalabad spinner Aqeel Ahmed brought the scores level. Two balls to hold out against and gain victory on fewer wickets lost - and held out against they were, to earn a home tie against Yorkshire.

Leicestershire 156
PA Nixon 33*, AJ Procter 3-26
Devon 156-9
RI Dawson 42, JM Dakin 3-40

Chester-le-Street: Sussex v Durham
Half-centuries from Chris Adams (68) and Ian Ward (54) were enough to see Sussex past their NCL2 basement rivals at the Riverside, despite Ian Pattison's 3-45. Durham fell 22 short of Sussex's 245, with Mohammad Akram taking 4-61.

Canterbury: Berkshire v Kent
Kent cruised past Berkshire after Martin Saggers topped and tailed the innings with excellent figures of 4-6 off 7.4 overs. Skipper Julian Wood's 49 was key in the final total of 143, and Rob Key (61*) and Michael Carberry (51) made extra short work of the target, the winning runs coming after just 16.3 overs.

Northampton: Cambridge v Northamptonshire
Three half centuries in the Northants innings set an imposing 273 for their neighbours, Graeme Swann's 50 off 40 balls providing the platform opening and Martin van Jaarsveld (85) and David Sales (67) the impetus to go on. Jason Brown destroyed the Cambridge top order with 5-19 before Usman Afzaal (3-4) and van Jaarsveld (1-1) finished the tail.

Worcester: Herefordshire v Worcestershire
Rescheduled from Old Luctonians, Ben Smith's 91 drove Worcester to 279 from their 47 overs in a rain-affected game. Herefordshire, with Richard Hall hitting 54*, made 146-4 off 29 overs, and after some convoluted Duckworth-Lewis calculations, lost by 19 runs.

Birmingham: Shropshire v Warwickshire
Dougie Brown took 4-30 as Shropshire collapsed to 119, despite James Ralph's 38. Ian Bell made short work of the target, hammering 58* in 37 balls that included 12 fours as the runs were knocked off in 21 overs.

Lamphey: MC Wales v Middlesex
Following yesterday's maiden List A ton from Jamie Dalrymple, Melvyn Betts tore the heart out of Wales' middle and lower order, taking 4-15 after Nantie Hayward had taken two at the top end, to skittle the Welsh. Andrew Jones made 42, but none of the last eight passed six as 62-1 rapidly became 103 all out.

Westbury: Wiltshire v Nottinghamshire
No play was possible for a second succesive day at Wellhead Lane, and the two sides will replay next weekend for the right to host Essex in the Last 16.

Third Round Draw
Devon v Yorkshire
Gloucestershire v Hampshire
Ireland v Northamptonshire
Middlesex v Glamorgan
Sussex v Lancashire
Warwickshire v Kent
Wiltshire/Notts v Essex
Worcestershire v Somerset
