Rebels replaced for first Test
Thursday, May 6 2004Four of the 'rebels' - former captain Heath Streak, left-arm spinner Ray Price, all-rounder Sean Ervine and batsman Trevor Gripper - all of whom after being included in the Zimbabwean side for the first Test against Sri Lanka pulled out due to the continuing dispute with the Zimbabwe Cricket Union (ZCU), have been replaced.
As a result, five players will make their debuts in Tests, when Zimbabwe battles Sri Lanka today. The new caps in the team include off-spinner Prosper Utseya, 19, fast bowler Tinashe Panyangara, 20, batsmen Alester Maregwede, 23, and Brendan Taylor, 18, and all rounder Elton Chigumbura, 18.
Brendan Taylor was the only one who was named in the original squad, before the 'rebels' pulled out. The others are the replacements.
Meanwhile, batsman Mark Vermeulen, who also had been named in the squad, has been ruled out, as he wasn't passed medically fit.
Zimbabwe squad:
Tatenda Taibu (captain, wicket-keeper), Dion Ebrahim, Brendan Taylor, Mluleki Nkala, Blessing Mahwire, Douglas Hondo, Prosper Utseya, Tinashe Panyangara, Alester Maregwede, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Elton Chigumbura.
