NCL1: Glamorgan hit the front
Wednesday, May 5 2004Cardiff: Glamorgan v Northamptonshire
Elliott ton sends Dragons top
An undefeated century from Australian Matthew Elliott was enough for the Glamorgan Dragons to see off the Northamptonshire Steelbacks at Sophia Gardens as they recorded their third consecutive NCL win.
A breezy half-century from Graeme Swann opening the batting and contrasting fifties from Usman Afzaal and David Sales guided the visitors to a useful 233, with Mike Kasprowicz and Andrew Davies taking two wickets each.
Northants started well in the Glamorgan reply, with Johann Louw removing both pinch hitters in Robert Croft and Alex Wharf, but Elliott (112*), first in partnership with Mike Powell, and then Matt Maynard (71*) as they overhauled the target with five overs and one ball to spare.
Northamptonshire 233-7
GP Swann 66, AP Davies 2-33
Glamorgan 234-3
MTG Elliott 112*, J Louw 2-47
Chelmsford: Essex v Warwickshire
Hussain stars in the slog in the gloom
Essex claimed the points in a game that was reduced to a 10-over-a-side swing of the bat at Chelmsford, after Nasser Hussain (21 balls) and Andy Flower (31 balls) both made 40, adding 79 unbeaten runs for the third wicket after Will Jefferson and Ronnie Irani had fallen early.
The Warwick reply was strangled early on by Scott Brant and James Middlebrook's off-spin didn't allow the middle order to get away - only one batsman faced more than 10 balls - and despite Jonathan Trott's unbeaten 9-ball 19, the Bears fell six runs short.
Essex 89-2
N Hussain 40*, A Flower 40*
Warwickshire 83-6
IJL Trott 19*, JD Middlebrook 2-17
