Kenway leads the way for Hants
Saturday, May 8 2004
County Championship Division 2
Day 1 - 7th May 2004
Durham 332 for 9 vs Essex
(Muchall 94, Kaneria 3 for 83)
Essex are probably regretting their decision to field after winning the toss. After a couple of early wickets, Durham, Muchall led an effective fight back, ably supported by G. Pratt (43), Breese (42) and a series of useful contributions from the lower order. The wickets were shared pretty equally between the bowlers. Napier, ten Doeschate & Stephenson each claimed a couple and Danish Kaneria claimed three lower order scalps.
Hampshire 333 for 6 vs Derbyshire
(Kenway 101, Pothas 86*, Mohammad Ali 2 for 79)
Hampshire continued their good start to the season with a strong batting display. Derek Kenway led the way with an impressive hundred, and, although several of his colleagues got out after getting a start, Nik Pothas ensured that the opener's efforts weren't wasted.
Glamorgan 196 for 5 vs Nottinghamshire
(Hemp 62*, Powell 53, Sidebottom 2 for 46, Ealham 2 for 43)
Useful contributions from Matt Elliott, David Hemp and Mike Powell had put Glamorgan in a strong position at 167 for 2. However, three quick wickets near the close made things pretty even. Notts will be pleased with the success of their new recruits, with Sidebottom and Ealham sharing four of the five wickets to fall.
