Jaques replaces Lehmann for Yorks

Friday, May 7 2004

Yorkshire have signed batsman Phil Jaques as a replacement for Darren Lehmann, while the latter is away on international duty for Australia.

Lehmann, who has been selected for Australia's tour of Zimbabwe for both formats of the game, will be unavailable for about a month until mid-June.

Jaques represented the Northants last summer, socring over 1,400 runs, before returning home to Australia to play for New South Wales.

This move basically ended all hopes for a place in the England side, as Jaques will now require three more years to qualify for selection, despite holding a British passport. However, he has other plans, that of trying for a place in the Australian side.

Earlier, Northamptonshire contemplated legal action to enable Jaques to continue playing for them. They initially claimed that current registration regulations, as they applied to Jaques, were in breach of European employment law, but decided not to pursue the matter after talks with the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Yorkshire expect Jaques to arrive in time to play in the home Championship game against Hampshire, starting on May 12.
