UCCE Game Round-up Day 2

Monday, April 12 2004

The second days play in the friendly warm-ups

Cambridge UCCE vs. Essex

Essex dominated with first ball then bat at Fenners, as Adrian McCoubrey and James Middlebrook starred.

McCoubrey was first, picking up a further 2 wickets as the students were skittled for 116 in 30 overs.

Batting a second time, Essex promoted some who didn't get a decent hit in the first innings, and Middlebrook took advantage to register his maiden first class century, and veteran John Stephenson joined him in an unbeaten stand of 179 before the declaration left a target of 399.

McCoubrey then picked up both openers quickly before the close.

ESSEX 292-5 (Jefferson 144, Habib 54, Bopara 40*, Marshall 3-42)
CAMBRIDGE UCCE 116 (McCoubrey 4-16, Clarke 3-32)
ESSEX 222-2 (Middlebrook 101*, Stephenson 71*)
CAMBRIDGE UCCE 57-2 (McCoubrey 2-16)

Durham vs. Durham UCCE

Bowlers were in control today, as 16 wickets fell.

The surprise star for the County side was Australian debutant Marcus North, who took career best figures as only Mark Dale showed much reisistance.

The Follow-on wasn't enforced, and North showed why he'd been selected originally with a half century, but the majority of the batsmen failed again in a collapse of 5 wickets for 16 runs and it was left to Gavin Hamilton and keeper Andy Pratt (again) to repiece the innings together.

DURHAM 311 (A Pratt 67, G Pratt 45, Daggett 8-94)
DURHAM UCCE 133 (Dale 48, North 4-16)
DURHAM 194 (North 60, A Pratt 48*, Hamilton 42, Somerville-Hendrie 3-31)

Oxford UCCE vs. Surrey

Surrey's all-International bowling line-up got a useful run-out after the overnight declaration.

All of them picked up wickets as the University battled away all day, Omar Anwar and Josh Knappett impressing in a 108 run 5th wicket stand.

Yet another side decided not to make their weaker opposition bat again, and although first-innings centurion Scott Newman fell early, captain's past (Adam Hollioake) and present (Jonathon Batty) batted to the close.

SURREY 452-5 (Benning 128, Ramprakash 113, Newman 100, Munday 3-87)
OXFORD UCCE 267 (Anwar 82, Knappett 45, Salisbury 3-43)
SURREY 62-1

Somerset vs. Loughborough UCCE

This is easily the most competitive game of the 6 being played, as Loughborough continued their innings a further 13 overs before declaring.

Opening bowler David Wigley then shot out both openers as Somerset struggled in reply until Jamie Cox took control with a majestic unbeaten 144. Support came from Neil Edwards and Matthew Wood as a possibly interesting run chase may be on tomorrow.

LOUGHBOROUGH UCCE 304-8 (Nash 63, Adams 47)
SOMERSET 296-6 (Cox 144*, Wood 57, Edwards 40, Wigley 4-92)

Worcestershire vs. Cardiff UCCE

A second day of Worcestershire dominance, no fewer than 4 batsmen getting into the 80s.

After finally taking pity on them and declaring, 11 overs brought just 5 runs for the students in a horribly one-sided game.

CARDIFF UCCE 118 (Malik 6-41)
WORCESTERSHIRE 506-8 (Peters 89, Rhodes 87, Solanki 84, Mitchell 83)
CARDIFF UCCE 5-2

Yorkshire v Bradford/Leeds UCCE

Another shockingly one-sided affair here, as it proved a very good day to be called Matt Wood.

First the wickets were shared evenly as the students were skittled, falling 303 behind.

Then Yorkshire destroyed the bowling to the tune of 350 runs in just 46 overs - Wood plundering 31 fours and 7 sixes whilst facing just 129 balls for 213 runs, and Michael Lumb hitting 80 from 74 balls.

Facing a target of 654, they fared a bit better this time round, still 5 down at the close, but at least they have 90 on the board.

YORKSHIRE 401 (Taylor 150, Guy 90, White 53, Jones 4-58)
BRADFORD/LEEDS UCCE 98 (Blain 4-36, Craven 3-11, Silverwood 3-27)
YORKSHIRE 350-2 (Wood 213*, Lumb 80)
BRADFORD/LEEDS UCCE 90-5
