Tuesday, April 13 2004

The second days play in the friendly warm-ups

Cambridge UCCE vs. Essex

Essex completed a comfortable 153 run win in picking up the last 8 wickets.

Again the bowlers shared the spoils, and only spiritted lower middle order fight back got the students as close as they did.

ESSEX 292-5 (Jefferson 144, Habib 54, Bopara 40*, Marshall 3-42)
CAMBRIDGE UCCE 116 (McCoubrey 4-16, Clarke 3-32)

CAMBRIDGE UCCE 245 (Wright 57, ten Doeschate 3-29, McCoubrey 3-56)

Durham vs. Durham UCCE

The county side fell 1 wicket short of victory, with one man indisposed.

Durham batted on for a while in the morning, Andy Pratt completing a second half century in the game, before a declaration left a notional target of 470.

A welcome return to bowling form for former England all-rounder Gavin Hamilton was the highlight, although highly-rated Graeme Bridge returned tidy figures of 2-7 from 12 overs.

DURHAM 311 (A Pratt 67, G Pratt 45, Daggett 8-94)
DURHAM UCCE 133 (Dale 48, North 4-16)
DURHAM 291-9 (A Pratt 68, North 60, Hamilton 42, Somerville-Hendrie 3-51, Bishop 3-81)
DURHAM UCCE 132-8 (Smith 48, Hamilton 3-30)

Oxford UCCE vs. Surrey

Oxford's 9th wicket pair defied Surrey with an unbroken stand of 39 to secure a draw.

Surrey batted on, giving the bowlers a chance to score some easy runs before a declaration left a target of 350, but in spite of the best efforts of Jimmy Ormond and Ian Salisbury, the match wasn't Surrey's.

SURREY 452-5 (Benning 128, Ramprakash 113, Newman 100, Munday 3-87)
OXFORD UCCE 267 (Anwar 82, Knappett 45, Salisbury 3-43)
SURREY 164-5 (Shahid 44*, Linley 3-44)
OXFORD UCCE 154-8 (Sayers 56, Salisbury 3-30, Ormond 3-34)

Somerset vs. Loughborough UCCE

Another drawn game was certain when Somerset declined to declare this morning, allowed Jamie Cox to carry his score onto 172.

In reply the students were untroubled as Andy Caddick got through another 12 overs.

LOUGHBOROUGH UCCE 304-8 (Nash 63, Adams 47)
SOMERSET 379 (Cox 172, Wood 57, Edwards 40, Wigley 4-133)
LOUGHBOROUGH UCCE 154-2 (Nash 54*)

Worcestershire vs. Cardiff UCCE

The county wrapped an easy innings and 224 run victory here, although Cardiff did well to recover from 21-4 and 55-5 to beat their first innings total, thanks mainly to Ian Clayton.

Matt Mason and Shaftab Khalid were the bowling stars, sharing 8 wickets.

CARDIFF UCCE 118 (Malik 6-41)
WORCESTERSHIRE 506-8 (Peters 89, Rhodes 87, Solanki 84, Mitchell 83)
CARDIFF UCCE 164 (Clayton 44, Mason 4-25, Khalid 4-47)

Yorkshire v Bradford/Leeds UCCE

Jonathon Siddall was the only student to come out of this game with any credit, as his unbeaten knock helped amass 73 from the last 2 wickets in an hour.

481 runs was the final margin in a hugely disappointing affair.

YORKSHIRE 401 (Taylor 150, Guy 90, White 53, Jones 4-58)
BRADFORD/LEEDS UCCE 98 (Blain 4-36, Craven 3-11, Silverwood 3-27)
