Cairns announces retirement plan

Monday, April 5 2004

Chris Cairns has announced today that he will retire from test cricket after New Zealand's three test series against England in May.

Cairns said his main reason was that he wants to spend more time with his family. He sees his retirement from tests as allowing himself to continue playing ODI cricket for a longer period of time and hopefully making it through to the 2007 World Cup.

In a television interview earlier today Cairns said his favourite cricketing moment was New Zealand's test victory over England at Lords in 1999 while his worst moment was his continued injuries.

Cairns started his first class career 16 years ago and goes into his final three tests with 3160 runs from 59 tests at an average of 33.97. His test bowling statistics read 206 wickets at an average of 29.27.
