PCB says no to central contracts

Thursday, April 15 2004

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced informally today through their chief executive Ramiz Raja, that they don't have enough money to introduce a central contracts system for players, which a lot of other cricket boards have.

Pakistan vice-captain Yousuf Youhana had urged the board to introduce a contract system to stem a surge in injuries among top players, after four front-line players had to miss out from the second and the on-going third Test against India.

Pakistani players are currently paid per match according to a grading system based on seniority.

According to PCB officials, they suffered heavy financial losses after the 9/11 attacks in the United States when teams refused to tour Pakistan because of the war in neighbouring Afghanistan.

However, according to Raja, the about-to-conclude India series has allowed the board to recover some of those losses.
