Indians to get central contracts

Tuesday, July 6 2004

After months of speculation, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally announced that the long awaited central contracts system for the national team members will be put into practice starting late July

The first set of contracts will be officially announced by the board chief Jagmoham Dalmiya either on the 18th or 19th of July, as in order to make them valid from the Asia Cup, which kicks off on the 16th.

As per the system, the players will be graded in three groups as following:
--Top Category, the players in which will earn 6 million rupees ($134,000) annually
--Middle Category, the players in which will earn 3 million rupees ($67,000) annually
--Lower Category, the players in which will earn 1.5 million rupees ($33,500) annually

Apart from the guaranteed salary, the players will get fees for individual matches. The contracts, however, will be offered only to those players who have played a minimum of three Tests or 10 One-Day Internationals.

Senior players like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Anil Kumble etc. would predictably be included in the top tier.
