Centuries at the double

Tuesday, July 6 2004

Graeme Hick and Ian Thomas hammered centuries for Worcestershire and Glamorgan respectively as their counties registered wins in today's Twenty20 games.

Thomas' supreme 116 from 57 balls lead Glamorgan to an 8 wicket win as they chased down a very imposing Somerset score of 193-8, an innings built around a 33-ball knock of 66 from young James Hildreth and some brutal hitting from the other top order batsmen as none of the Welsh counties bowlers were spared some hammer.

Meanwhile Hick's innings came when batting first, and guided Worcestershire to 173-5 from their innings, the former England man hitting 6 sixes and 11 fours in his 65-ball knock. Rain meant that Northamptonshire needed 102 from 11 overs, but they were never in the hunt against a disciplined attack, and struggled to 80-8 by the end of their overs.

Finally, Kent were comprehensively beaten by Essex, for whom almost all the bowlers were economical and penetrative in dismissing their hosts for just 125, the top score being a meagre 25 from Shahid Afridi.
Essex were never going to struggle to make the target, and captain Ronnie Irani batted through the innings as they won by a comfortable 8 wickets with more than 4 overs to spare.

KENT 125 [Brant 4-20(3.2), Napier 2-17(4), Middlebrook 2-17(3), Clarke 1-18(4)] lost to ESSEX 128-2 [Irani 64*(52), Napier 38(27)] by 8 wickets.
NORTHAMPTONSHIRE 80-8 [Leatherdale 2-15(2), Hall 2-18(3), Wigley 1-8(2)] lost to WORCESTERSHIRE 173-5 [Hick 116*(65), Louw 2-22(4), Greenidge 2-47(4)] by 21 runs.
SOMERSET 193-8 [Hildreth 66(33), Burns 36(27), Croft 2-40(4)] lost to GLAMORGAN 194-2 [Thomas 116*(57), Hemp 31*(26)] by 8 wickets.
