Super Series to be held in Aust.

Monday, July 5 2004

The ICC has announced Australia as the host of a Super Series in October 2005, which pits the top Test and ODI teams against a combined Rest of the World XI. Sydney and Melbourne were named as the venues to be used for a six-day Test and a best-of-three one-day series.

Initial speculation that the Series was to be held in South Africa or India was debunked today when ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed officially announced Australia as host. He commented: "Cricket enjoys a tradition of national teams playing Rest of the World sides and these matches have provided terrific cricket. Unfortunately, in recent years, the way the calendar has worked has made it very difficult to play these types of games and they have drifted off the schedule."

Barring several major upsets, Australia are likely to remain top of the ICC's Test and ODI rankings, meaning that they will be taking on the world in front of their home crowd. The rankings deadline for the Super Series is April 1, 2005. Cricket Australia chief executive said "Should the Australian team remain on top of the world rankings, I am sure all our players will relish the challenge of playing against the world's best."
