West Indies v MCC : Day 1
Thursday, July 15 2004Well-struck centuries from Devon Smith (142) and Brian Lara (113 retired) were the main attraction on day one of the tour match between the West Indies and the MCC. The West Indians closed play at 373/6.
Openers Gayle (43) and Devon Smith added 90 runs for the first wicket, but when Gayle was caught off Simon Jones (1/75), Bravo (4) followed soon after and the score slipped to 99/2. From there Brian Lara took over, reaching his hundred from 89 balls and retiring hurt for 113 off 106 balls. His innings included 18 fours and 2 sixes.
Smith's hundred took 156 balls and he went on to 142 from 211 balls with 22 fours. Upon Lara's retirement, Chanderpaul (0) and Dwayne Smith (2) ensured a minor collapse to the bowling of Hoggard (2/28). Carlton Baugh chipped in with 38 but was bowled by Patel (2/82) and at stumps the unbeaten batsmen were Omari Banks (12 not out) and Pedro Collins (2 not out).
