Barbados will host 2007 CWC Final
Thursday, July 15 2004Well it may be three years away, but there is certainly much to be done in preparation for the next Cricket World Cup. In the hectic planning process for the 2007 event in the West Indies, the two major venues have been decided upon. Barbados as been granted the privilege of hosting the final and Jamaica the opening ceremony and the opening match. Jamaica will also be the base country for the home side during the tournament, meaning the West Indies team will play all its games there.
ICC President, Eshan Mani commented on the Caribbean World Cup preparations - "Cricket has a unique ability to draw together the people of this glorious region. The strength of this bond will be crucial to the successful hosting of the ICC Cricket World Cup."
The semi-finals have been allocated to Jamaica and St. Lucia whilst second round and Super Eight matches will involve Guyana and Grenada. Quarter-final rights were granted to Antigua, Grenada, Guyana and Barbados. India and England will be hosted in Trinidad and Tobago and St. Lucia respectively and reigning champions, Australia will reside in St. Kitts and Nevis.
To accommodate the massive event, there are plans to build new stadia in Guyana and Antigua and for significant upgrades at the six other venues around the region.
