NCL1: Surrey's nightmare continues
Monday, July 12 2004Hampshire v Lancashire, The Rose Bowl
Lancs clinch a nail-biter
Lancashire held on to their nerves to overcome the Hawks by a single run, in a nail-biter at the Rose Bowl, thus solidifying their place in the upper half of the Division table. Chasing 183 for victory, the visitors floundered initially, but managed to make a match out of it, to eventually lose out. Inserted into bat first, the Lancs recovered from a shameful 79-6 to post 182-8, thanks to a 79-run partnership between former Derbyshire skipper Dominic Cork and wicket-keeper Warren Hegg. Cork reached a half century, before getting out bowled to Taylor, who picked up three wickets.
The Hawks in reply looked in trouble at 92-5, after James Anderson too three quick wickets. Shane Watson hit 54 not out, and put together a 66-run partnership with Nick Pothas. But a crucial last over wicket of Pothas by Carl Hooper meant that the Hants were left standed one run short of victory.
Lancashire 182-8 (45 overs)
DG Cork 57(73), WK Hegg 37(44), AD Mullaly 28-2(9), BV Taylor 51-3(9)

Northamptonshire v Glamorgan, Northampton
Maynard's blast goes in vain
A sublime 117 from veteran Matthew Maynard went in vain, as Northamptonshire managed a 17 run win over leaders Glamorgam at home. Rob White, playing in his first limited overs match this season for the hosts, hit 101 so as to take them to a comprehensive score of 267-8, which also included a century opening stand with Tim Roberts, who made 68. They did suffer a sort of mini-collapse, which prevented them from putting up a larger target for the visitors, which was a definate possibility at one stage.
Glamorgan's start was far from convincing, but Maynard not only rescued them so as to avoid a humiliating defeat, but also bring the match alive towards the end. Having hit four sixes, he finally fell, bowled, to Jason Brown, which sealed off the victory for the hosts. George Swann was the pick of the bowlers though, picking up three wickets to engineer the initial panic in the Glamorgan batting line-up.
Northamptonshire 267-8 (45 overs)
TW Roberts 68(76), RA White 101(120), AG Wharf 49-2(9), SD Thomas 36-2(5)
Glamorgan 250 all out (44.3 overs)
MP Maynard 117(108), J Louw 45-3(8.3), GP Swann 39-3(9)
Northamptonshire (4 points) beat Glamorgan (0 points) by 17 runs.

Surrey v Gloucestershire, The Brit Oval
Gladiators convincingly dispose off Lions
Surrey's nightmarish run in the Totesport League continues as they crashed to another miserable defeat, this time at the hands of Gloucestershire. Winning the toss, and batting first, the home side tumbled to a meagre 176 all out, rocked by a clinical bowling performance by the opposition captain, Mark Alleyne. The veteran took four wickets at an acceptable economy, in his quota of nine overs. None of the Lions' batsmen managed to cross a half century, with overseas call up Greg Blewett top-scoring, a mediocre 39.
Phil Weston and Matt Windows made sure that the Gladiators didn't gave the hosts even a sniff of a chance for victory, after England discard Rikki Clarke struck two early blows. While Weston kept one end steady, Windows went berseck at the other end scoring a brisky run-a-ball. A flurry of wickets after their century partnership was too late to capitalize on for Surrey, as the visitors reached the target in the 39th over. Clarke finished with four wickets, evidently the pick of the Lions' bowlers.
Surrey 176 all out (43.5 overs)
GS Blewett 36(66), GP Thorpe 39(60), JMM Averis 30-2(8.5), MW Alleyne 39-4(9), MCJ Ball 26-2(9)
Gloucestershire 180-6 (38.1 overs)
WPC Weston 40(82), MGN Windows 63(63), R Clarke 50-4(9)
Gloucestershire (4 points) beat Surrey (0 points) by 4 wickets.

Warwickshire v Essex, Edgbaston
Hoggy leads Bears to comfortable win
Australian left-arm spinner Brad Hogg finally made his presence felt on the English County scene, by taking his first five wicket haul this season, to take his side, the Bears to a 54-run win over Essex. Batting first, the Warwicks' innings didn't get off to a desirable start, despite a returning Nick Knight scoring a half century. Scott Brant checked the other end, picking up a total of four wickets in the innings. A late dash from Dougie Brown, however took the home side to a challenging score of 223.
Chasing a possible target of 224, Essex looked well on track with Andy Flower scoring 32, and keeping one end safe. They reached a score of 99-2 at once stage, before Flower's wicket was followed by a major collapse, doctored by Hogg, that included seven wickets for just 41 runs. A last wicket partnership of 29 prevented the Aussie from bagging another wicket.
Warwickshire 223 all out (43.5 overs)
NV Knight 51(68), DR Brown 41(42), SA Brant 49-4(8.5), GR Napier 35-2(9)
