WI v MCC : Day 3
Friday, July 16 2004Despite a second batting collapse for the match, the West Indians pulled through on the performance of their bowlers, as wickets were shared around in a 29-runv tour win over the MCC. Overnight batsmen Chris Gayle (84) and Brian Lara (43) added some 22 runs to the opening score of 115/5 until the latter was Hoggard's fourth innings and eight match victim.
From 137/6 it was quite simple for Charl Willoughby in knocking back the tail. The South African finished with figures of 5/48 and Hoggard with 4/58. Simon Jones (1/25) was the only other wicket-taker, that of Gayle.
This left the MCC batsmen needing to score 278 runs for victory, but Pedro Collins got in their way early. Collins accounted for Koenig (8), Michael Powell (0) and Graham Thorpe (4) to set the score at 30/3. At the other end, Alester Cook played positively in compiling 89 from 119 balls (13 fours). He lost Dale Berkenstein (9) to Lawson at 77/4 then added 74 runs with his captain Stephenson (58). Finally Cook departed caught behind off Omari Banks - 151/5 - and later the same bowler accounted for Stephenson, caught by Lara - 213/6.
Wicketkeeper Wessels (34) was run out on the same score and Patel (4) and Jones (2) followed quickly to Lawson and Banks respectively. Matthew Hoggard provided some surprising resistence of 25 from 22 balls, but Lawson bowled him as the last man - 248 all out.
Pedro Collins led the attack with 11-1-40-3, followed by Jermaine Lawson 11.3-0-50-3 and Omari Banks 18-3-55-3. Fidel Edwards was disappointing yet again and ended with innings figures of 0/66 from 14 overs and match figures of 24-2-115-0.
