Carib Beer Cup 2004
Round 6

Day 1 West Indies 'B' vs Guyana at Georgetown, Guyana.

A strong return by West Indies captain Ramnaresh Sarwan coupled with the efforts of Travis Dowlin, helped Guyana to a decent position at the close of day one of their round six match. The West Indies 'B' team won the toss and elected to bowl first and had their hosts 73/2 at lunch, with Krishna Arjune (2) and Sewnarine Chattergoon (3) the early wickets.

Sarwan and Dowlin, now well-entrenched, batted on after lunch and the partnership crossed 150 runs. Both batsmen got their fifties and the stand was eventually broken at 162 as Sarwan fell for 95 - 174/3. His innings took 154 balls and included eight fours amidst positive and confident batting.

Dowlin, who had been dropped whilst on 64, batted on until he was brilliantly caught by Shawn Findlay for 94, 6 runs short of his third regional century. Narsingh Deonarine was put down by bowler Austin whilst on 3 and batted easily to 35 where he gave his wicket away due a lofted shot.

Guyana reached stumps at 266/5 with captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul unbeaten on 16 and Damodar Daesrath on 3. Thus far Jason Bennett (2/44) is the leading bowler for the 'B' team.

Day 1 Kenya v the Windward Islands at Kingstown, St. Vincent.

Fernix Thomas levelled Kenya from a tea-time position of 104/3 to 152 all out, to give the Windward Islands a big upper hand after day one of their sixth round matchup. Having lost the toss, the Kenyans were asked to take first strike and Kennedy Obuya (28) and Ravindu Shah (18) managed a solid 50 for the first wicket, before Thomas claimed both batsmen and captain Tikolo (0) in for the addition of just 3 runs, broken only by lunch.

Maurice Odumbe (18) and Hitesh Modi (33) then set about to rebuild the innings and took the score to 105, then Thomas got into the act once more. Collins Obuya score a useful 23, but when all was said an done, Fernix Thomas had career-best figures of 8/28 to his name and Kenya had lost seven wickets for just 47 runs.

In their reply the Windwards closed on 4/0 with Devon Smith (1) and Romel Currency (2) the incumbent.

Day 1 Trinidad and Tobago v Jamaica at St. Elizabeth, Jamaica.

Trinidad and Tobago collapsed yet again, this time at the hands of Jamaica to end day one of their matchup on fairly level terms. Before the game former captain Imran Jan was forced out of the XI due injury. He was replaced by Earnil Ryan. After being asked to bat first, the visitors quickly lost captain Daren Ganga (10) and Dwayne Bravo (0) and were found struggling at 22/3.

Aneil Kanhai was dropped first ball to a rather regulation catch and proceeded to give himself every opportunity to be dismissed by playing a mix of good attacking shots with the more common loose and ill-advised shots. He was supported by a solid and impressive Sherwin Ganga (64) and eventually found his way to his third FC hundred.

Eventually he perished for 111 after a collapse which saw Trinidad and Tobago eventually all out for 229. Dave Bernard Jr. (3/57) and Gareth Breese (3/35) were the major Jamaican culprits. In reply the home side closed at 9/0.

Trinidad and Tobago 1st innings 82/2
(Aneil Kanhai 111, Sherwin Ganga 64)
(Gareth Breese 3/35, Dave Bernard Jr. 3/57)

Jamaica 1st innings 9/0

Day 1 Barbados v the Leeward Islands at Amalie, US Virgin Islands.

Sherwin Campbell smacked the Leewards bowlers to all parts to place Barbados nicely whilst ensuring that his 2004 domestic season not be a total disappointment. Entering the sixth round game with very little to his name in the tournament, the former West Indies opener faced 282 balls in compiling an impressive 162 not out, with twenty-one fours.

Unfortunately however, the rest of the Bajan batsmen failed to follow Campbell's example and for the most part got themselves out after getting set.

Kurt Wilkinson (21) added 49 for the first wicket until his skied spinner Virgil Browne to deep mid on. Campbell was then joined by Ryan Hinds (49) and the two shared in a brisk 104-run stand when the latter missed a straight one from offspinner Hodge, playing across the line.

Reifer (27) top-edged a hook, Smith (1) missed an attempted slog to be bowled and Antonio Mayers (20) fought bravely before playing across the line of a pitched-up delivery from seamer Cornwall. When Hurley came to the crease he got his first runs with a pull through midwicket, but was to be dropped twice (on 9) before top-edging a hook to the deep fine leg boundary to return for 21. First Willet dropped him off Sanford, then Sanford dropped him off Jeremy as the chain reaction connected consecutive overs.

At stumps Barbados is 356/7 with Ian Bradshaw (8 not out) keeping Campbell company.

Barbados 1st innings 356/7 (89 overs)
(Sherwin Campbell 162 not out, Ryan Hinds 49)
(Kerry Jeremy 2/92, Chaka Hodge 2/93)
