Ngam injured; Out of NZ tour

Sunday, February 8 2004

South African paceman Mfuneko Ngam will miss his country's forthcoming tour to New Zealand, after suffering another stress fracture, this time of his shin. He suffered the injury last week, however it was detected only this Thursday.

Ngam has had tough luck with injuries, never really being steadily fit to feature as a regular in the Proteas side. Before his debut in 2001, he suffered a serious spine injury. He overcame that to make in to the Test side. However, after playing only three Tests, he has been overshadowed with a serious of stress fractures.

The United Cricket Board (UCB) selectors haven't yet named Ngam's replacement. But Lance Klusener is most likely to be take the place, thus regaining his Test spot.

Meanwhile, spinner Robin Peterson will recover by the time South Africa leaves for New Zealand, after he suffered severe abdominal strain in his team's last ODI against West Indies at home. Shane Jabaar, the team physio, confirmed that Peterson had suffered a strain and not a tear, and would be able to play again within a week.
